1. Write story which you have experienced

Always try to narrate a real life story in the letter either you are asked to write a letter to a friend for vacation or to a landlord to complain always try to connect it to some actual experience from your own life, if that is possible. Your real life experiences will help you to make the context of situation more real and is likely to make your written communication appear more convincing and realist to the examiner. It also reduces the pressure of having to think of too many new ideas.

2. Write on serious note

IELTS is a not a fun so your writing should also be on a serious note and you should not turn it in a joke like writing ‘Dear Superman,…’ or ending your letter with something like, ‘Yours sincerely, Sleeping Beauty’. If you are too creative try to make your letter impressive with your unique ideas. In the letter always write in a straightforward and genuine way. There is a higher probability of the examiner being impressed this way.

3. Make sure the tone is appropriate

Choose a tone that suits with both, the type of letter and the relation shared by the letter writer and the receiver is sure to impress the examiner.

For example, if you are writing an official letter your language should be formal and on the contrary if you are writing to a close friend you must use an informal style of English to show the closeness of the relationship.

4. Avoid repetition

As in speaking cue card you get an opportunity to show your wide range of vocabulary same is in Letter you get a chance to show command of synonyms and range of formal or informal expression giving a favorable impression to your examiner. If you repeat the same word again and again you will miss this chance and examiner will deduct your score for repetition.

5. Include the use of interesting expressions and vocabulary

Informal letters, such as letters to friends, are an especially good opportunity to employ the use of idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs. The usage of interesting expressions and vocabulary create interest of the reader (examiner) and he can give you some extra numbers.  It is however inadvisable to

· Translate idioms from your own native language into English

· Use idioms unless you are confident about their relevance and usage.

6. Keep explanations clear and economical

In case the letter asks you to explain something, make sure the explanation is not too long and complex. It always helps to keep it short and simple.

7. Appropriate conclusion
