IELTS General Letter Writing Tips
In today’s article we will discuss some tips abouthow to score good in writing letter in IELTS Exam. For some candidates it can be challenging to write a letter so, this article is to help you make things easier.
Tip 1: All Bullet points should be answered:
Each and every bullet point should be answered while writing your essay. To do this, write down ideas for each bullet point during the planning stage. It’s absolutely up to you whether you want to use a use real life situation that you have experienced, that a friend has experienced, or you can simply be creative in order to fully cover the points.
Tip 2: ‘Purpose’ of the paragraph should be clear:
It’s very important to state your purpose in the essay to give examiner a clear point of view. It helps the examiner to give a clear view about what you’re writing about. Make sure you use words from the background statement, and use synonyms where possible. This will show the examiner that you are writing on topic and answering the question exactly as you should be.
Tip 3: Make sure that you develop your main points sufficiently:
Keep count of words in each paragraph, make sure that there are around 50 words for each paragraph. If you’re short of words, remember that you can add as much detail as you can think of. Being specific often helps you to use higher level vocabulary so everyone is a winner.
Tip 4: Get your tenses right
In your planning phase identify the tenses that you are going to use. Double check to make sure you use the correct tenses in your letter. As your scoring depend on all the factors such as tenses, vocabulary and grammatical structure so you have to give attention to all the details.
Tip 5: Don’t be tempted to show off:
It’s always a good thing to use good vocabulary and grammar but there is no point if you utilize a lot of time in thinking about these words and using them in sentences. Instead only use vocabulary and grammar that you are confident and comfortable with and use on regular basis. This means that you are focusing on the accuracy of your vocabulary and grammar, and not on the range of your vocabulary and grammar.
Tip 6: Recheck to Avoid: -Spelling punctuation and grammar mistakes:
Make sure to recheck your essay as you do it and once again when you are done writing letter. You should always keep few minutes in the end for checking your spelling errors and grammatical errors. This will hopefully eliminate all the errors you might have made under the pressure of the exam.
Tip 7: Be careful not to mix the tone of your letter.
Make sure that you identify the tone you should be writing in, is it formal, semi formal or informal, during the planning stage. As you are writing, select appropriate words and phrases that reflect this tone. Keep a check at the end if you think a word or a phrase doesn’t match the tone of your letter make sure to replace it.
