IELTS WRITING TASK 2
People these days watch TV, films and other programmes alone rather than with other people. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In recent years, it has become increasingly common for individuals to watch television, films, and other media content alone rather than in the company of others. While this trend offers some advantages, I believe the disadvantages significantly outweigh them.
On the one hand, watching content alone provides viewers with flexibility and personal freedom. People can choose what to watch, when to watch it, and how they want to engage with it without having to compromise with others. This is particularly beneficial for those with busy schedules or differing tastes in entertainment. Additionally, watching alone can offer a chance to relax and unwind without distraction, which can be a valuable form of stress relief.
However, the drawbacks of this trend are more concerning. Watching media alone reduces opportunities for social interaction and shared experiences, which are vital for building and maintaining relationships. In the past, families and friends often gathered to watch shows or films together, strengthening bonds and encouraging meaningful conversation. The shift towards solitary viewing can contribute to social isolation, especially among the elderly or those living alone. Furthermore, communal media experiences can foster a sense of belonging and shared culture, which is gradually diminishing.
In conclusion, while watching media alone offers convenience and personal comfort, the erosion of shared viewing experiences negatively impacts social interaction and community connection. Therefore, the disadvantages of this development clearly outweigh the advantages.
