The diagram shows the progression of a bus’ design in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Over time the bus remained roughly rectangular in shape. However its size increased and it also became more efficient to run.

The earliest bus, known as the horse bus, consisted of a single deck and was made to carry approximately 20 people. The speed that the horse could pull it was limited by its narrow wheels. After this, in 1853, the horse-drawn omnibus appeared, which had a higher capacity than its predecessor due to the addition of an upper deck.

At the end of the nineteenth century, electricity replaced the horse and the trolley bus was invented, followed by the motor bus in 1897. This last invention resembled the buses of today, but it had an engine at the front and an entrance at the rear. A conductor was employed at the rear to check tickets. In the 1960s, the diesel powered bus became popular. This was more powerful than the petrol bus and had an entrance at the front to enable the driver to check tickets. This bus also had a higher capacity than any of the former buses, seating up to 72 people.
