IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some people say that humanitarian subjects such as philosophy, history and literature that people study in universities have no value for their future career. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give your own opinion and relevant examples.
SAMPLE ANSWER
There is an ongoing debate about whether subjects like philosophy, history, and literature, often classified as humanities, hold value for future careers. Some argue that these disciplines have limited relevance in today’s job market, while others maintain that they offer invaluable skills and insights that contribute to personal and professional growth. In my opinion, while these subjects may not lead directly to specific careers, they offer significant long-term benefits.
Firstly, studying humanities subjects fosters critical thinking, communication skills, and a deep understanding of human society. For example, philosophy encourages individuals to question assumptions and think analytically, skills that are essential in problem-solving and decision-making, which are relevant in any profession. Similarly, history provides insights into how societies have evolved, teaching lessons that are crucial in navigating modern challenges, particularly in fields like politics or international relations.
Moreover, subjects such as literature help develop empathy and cultural awareness, which are increasingly important in our globalized world. In the workplace, being able to understand different perspectives and communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds can be an asset.
However, it is true that not all students will use these disciplines directly in their careers. Fields like engineering or medicine may require more specialized technical knowledge. Nevertheless, the skills gained from studying humanities can complement any profession, helping individuals to think more broadly and adapt to various challenges.
In conclusion, while humanities subjects may not always lead to specific careers, they provide essential life skills that are beneficial in almost any field, making them valuable in the long run.
