IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Most of the world’s poor live in countries where tourism is a growth industry. The issue is that tourism does not benefit the poor.
How can the income generated by tourism benefit the poor? And how can we ensure that tourism does not destroy traditional culture and ways of life?
SAMPLE ANWER
Tourism is an industry which is growing across the globe. Often, this growth is in countries that are still developing, meaning a large proportion of the population still lives in poverty, and so people feel that tourism is not benefitting these people. This essay will identify ways in which earnings from tourism can benefit the poor and will suggest ways to ensure traditional local cultures are not damaged by tourism.
There are a number of ways in which income from tourism can be used to help the poor, both directly and indirectly. Firstly, income can be shared directly by employing poor people to work in the tourism industry. This means that the money they earn can then be taken straight back to their families and shared among the poorer community. One indirect way in which earnings from tourism can benefit the poor is by reinvestment in support services and facilities, for example by improving health care facilities or providing reduced fares on public transport. In this way, tourists would be contributing towards the support of poorer local people.
However, as well as the benefits that additional income from tourism may bring, there are also concerns over the damage done to traditional culture and ways of life that are caused by increased tourism. One way to ensure that tourism does not destroy traditional culture is make that traditional culture a focus of the local tourism industry. The reason that many tourists choose to visit a place is to enjoy the local traditions, food and culture, so preserving these things will be beneficial for both the tourism industry and the traditional way of life in that area. Also, promoting educational activities for visitors s part of their holiday experience can be a great way to promote awareness of traditional culture.
In summary, engaging with local people, particularly those from the poorest sections of society, can be a great way to benefit the poor and at the same time assist in the preservation of traditional culture. With sensible approaches, these problems can be easily solved.
