IELTS WRITING TASK 2
These days it is neither possible nor desirable for most people to stay in the same job throughout their working lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
SAMPLE ANSWER
It is certainly true that the situation regarding careers has changed significantly in recent years. In the past, it was quite common for the majority of people to remain in the same job from the time they left school until they retired, but this has become rare in modern life. This essay will outline some evidence for this change.
One of the obvious reasons for this phenomenon is that the requirements for performing jobs have changed dramatically. This shift is mainly due to the arrival of computers and information technology, which means that workers must gain new skills and advanced knowledge to keep pace with the rapidly changing workplace. Otherwise, they risk losing their jobs or needing to change to another one.
Another reason that needs to be taken into account is the global nature of business today. Companies frequently acquire other companies or go out of business entirely. This can force employees to adapt to new working environments and adopt the approaches of new leaders. As a result, many may find themselves changing jobs or losing their positions.
Nevertheless, it has been argued that we cannot gain much experience without a stable job. This perspective assumes that starting anew in a different position means beginning from scratch, often at a lower salary. However, changing jobs can provide opportunities to learn new skills and approaches, which can help us tackle various problems in our lives. Additionally, if we know how to apply previous skills in new contexts, we can increase our chances of promotion.
In conclusion, doing the same job year after year can become monotonous. Therefore, in modern society, changing jobs from time to time is often necessary and beneficial.
