One of the most interesting traditional stories I have ever heard is “The Monkey and the Crocodile”, which is a part of the famous Indian story collection Panchatantra. These stories are known for teaching moral values through simple yet meaningful tales, often featuring animals as main characters.
I first heard this story when I was around seven years old. My grandmother used to narrate it to me before bedtime. She had a very expressive way of telling stories — using gestures, different voices, and even pauses to make it sound dramatic. I remember sitting beside her, completely absorbed in the story every night.

The story revolves around a clever monkey who lived on a fruit tree by the river. One day, he became friends with a crocodile who lived in the water nearby. Every day, the monkey gave the crocodile sweet fruits from the tree, and they developed a strong bond. However, the crocodile’s wife grew jealous and greedy. She wanted to eat the monkey’s heart, thinking it would taste as sweet as the fruits he ate. The crocodile, though unwilling, tried to please his wife and invited the monkey to his home across the river.
While crossing the river, the crocodile revealed his wife’s plan. The monkey, being very intelligent, immediately said that he had left his heart on the tree and asked the crocodile to take him back. Once they reached the shore, the monkey quickly climbed up the tree and told the crocodile that he should never betray his friends.
What I find most fascinating about this story is its moral lesson — that wisdom and quick thinking are often more powerful than physical strength. It also shows how greed can destroy relationships. Even though it’s a simple story meant for children, it carries deep meaning that is still relevant in today’s world.
Moreover, this story holds sentimental value for me because it reminds me of my childhood and the time I spent with my grandmother. In today’s fast-paced world, people rarely take the time to share such stories, so this memory feels even more special. It also reflects the rich tradition of Indian storytelling, where tales are not just for entertainment but also for teaching moral and cultural lessons.

Do children nowadays still like listening to traditional stories?
To some extent, yes, but not as much as before. Modern children are more interested in watching cartoons or playing video games rather than listening to traditional tales. However, when stories are told in an engaging way, or through animated versions, children still find them enjoyable. I think the challenge is to make these stories more appealing in today’s digital world.
What kind of stories do children prefer nowadays?
Children today are usually drawn to fantasy and adventure stories that involve superheroes, magical worlds, or futuristic settings. They love imaginative plots with exciting visuals. Although these modern stories are entertaining, I feel they sometimes lack the deep moral lessons that traditional stories used to offer.
Do you think traditional stories are important for children? Why?
Yes, without a doubt. Traditional stories play a vital role in shaping a child’s moral values and understanding of right and wrong. They also introduce children to their country’s cultural roots and history. For instance, many Indian folk tales promote honesty, kindness, and cleverness — values that help children develop strong character traits.

How can we keep traditional stories alive in modern times?
I believe we can preserve traditional stories by adapting them to modern formats. For example, schools could include folk tales in their reading curriculum, or filmmakers could create animated versions for streaming platforms. Storytelling festivals, podcasts, and YouTube channels could also play a big role in keeping these stories alive for younger generations.
Do traditional stories reflect the culture of a country?
Absolutely. Traditional stories are a mirror of a society’s beliefs, values, and customs. They often describe the struggles, wisdom, and moral principles of ancient times.
