The charts illustrate the average proportions of salt, saturated fat, and added sugar in a typical American diet, divided across four daily eating occasions: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.

Overall, the evening meal provides the highest percentage of sodium and fat, while between-meal food contributes the largest share of sugar intake. In contrast, the morning meal consistently makes up the smallest fraction of all three nutrients.

The main meal of the day, dinner, contains the greatest proportion of sodium at 43% of the total, whereas lunch represents 29%. Both breakfast and snacks contribute only 14% each. A similar pattern is seen for fat intake. The evening meal again dominates with 37%, compared with 26%for lunch. Morning food accounts for 21%, while light meals between eating times constitute just 14%.

In terms of added sugar, snacks are by far the largest contributor, making up 42%. This figure is almost double the 23% recorded for dinner and more than twice the 19% for lunch. The morning meal contains the lowest proportion at 16%. Taken together, the data suggest that excessive salt and fat are consumed during main meals, while most sugar comes from food eaten between them.
