Strategies for IELTS Speaking Test Part 2

Many aspirants find IELTS speaking test very challenging specially the part 2 (cue card) of the test. In this part the candidate is given 1 minute to prepare a given topic and have to speak for 2 minutes on the same. Aspirants find difficulty in preparing the topic or speaking continuously for 2 minutes.

So, we will discuss the Strategies for IELTS Speaking Test Part 2 and these strategies will help you to plan and organize your answer in the given 1 minute and deliver the answer with confident continuously for 2 minutes even some test takers are confused about the word limit in part 2.

First, a typical question card that you might be given could look like this:

Describe a time when you encouraged someone to do someone that he/she didn’t want to do.

You should say

– Who he or she is?

– What you encouraged him/her to do?

– How he/she reacted?

– And explain why you encouraged him/her?

Now, you can see that in the example that there are 4 bullet points which will give you the idea of what to talk about. Now the important thing is that you should not only talk about the bullet points as this will make your answer short and boring. To perform this task in a better way we have a strategy which will help you to speak for 2 minutes comfortably.

The first thing you see highlighted in the cue card is bullet points make notes related to them but make sure the content is relevant to cue card. As already said you should not talk about bullet points only you should add explanation and supporting points with it.

Then come the example, in your supporting point you should add an example as it will increase your score but it should be related to the topic. Any type of example can be given based on anything you have read in the news or you, a friend, or family member have experienced.

The main thing in cue card is story as this factor will extend period of time and also give you the chance to show your vocabulary. So, narrate a story from your personal or friend’s experience and if you don’t have anything like this create one.

Real stories are always preferred as you can elaborate it properly and can describe the situation in detail which helps you to demonstrate your knowledge of vocabulary. For example, you can easily describe a place/experience which you yourself have experienced while in created one you have to think before speaking for every detail.

In IELTS speaking test most of the scores are deducted because of mistakes in tenses. To make over this problem write down anything related to the cue card from the past, present, or future. This will help you to speak variety of different tenses which of course is good thing for your band score.

The above said practice of noting various things about the topic will help you as after writing you will be well planned about your views, examples and supporting points. By this there will be a clear picture in your mind about the topic and while speaking you can ignore the bullet points and speak fluently. Moreover, the variety of tenses used will also help in increasing your bands.

Now, you should practice this strategy with variety of topics to make yourself habitual for this so that when you appear in exam you can easily speak for 2 minutes and impress the examiner with good vocabulary, tenses and ideas.

Thank You 🙂
