PTE LISTENING: SELECT MISSING WORD

PTE LISTENING

The “Select Missing Word” item in the PTE Listening section tests your ability to predict what word would logically complete a sentence based on context and tone. It’s a relatively short task, but accuracy is key because there’s no partial credit — you either get it right or wrong.

What is the Select Missing Word Task?

In this task, you’ll listen to a short audio (around 20–70 seconds). The final word or phrase is replaced with a beep sound, and your job is to choose the best option from a list of 3–5 options. These options are usually single words or short phrases.

The sentence will be complete except for the last word/phrase. Your understanding of the content, tone, grammar, and logic will help you pick the correct ending.

Tips to Master the Select Missing Word Task

1. Listen for Context, Not Just Words

It’s not about catching every single word. Focus on understanding the overall meaning and tone of the passage. The missing word usually fits logically or emotionally with the rest of the sentence.

Example: If the audio is a complaint about poor service, the missing word might be something like “unacceptable,” “disappointing,” or “frustrating.”

2. Pay Close Attention Near the End

Since the missing word is at the very end, the most important information usually comes in the last 10 seconds. Concentrate more as the audio nears the beep.

3. Use Collocation Knowledge

Words often appear in set combinations (collocations). For example, if the sentence says, “She was filled with a sense of _____,” a natural collocation would be “pride” or “dread” — not “computer.”

Improve your collocation knowledge through practice. Apps like “Collocation Dictionary” can help you become familiar with natural word pairings.

4. Eliminate Illogical Options

Some choices may sound completely out of context or grammatically incorrect. Eliminate anything that doesn’t match the tense, tone, or subject matter of the passage.

Example: In a formal academic talk, a casual word like “whatever” is unlikely to be correct.

5. Don’t Overthink It

You only get to hear the audio once, so trust your instincts. Don’t get stuck trying to analyze every detail. Go with the word that feels the most natural based on the flow and meaning.

6. Practice with Real PTE Material

Practicing with authentic PTE-style questions will help you get used to the accent, tone, and pacing of the audio. Use Pearson’s official practice tools or trusted third-party sources.

7. Improve Your Overall Listening Skills

This task is about predicting meaning — something that improves as your listening skills improve. Watch TED Talks, podcasts, or news programs and try to predict the last word or phrase of sentences.

8. Don’t Rush the Answer

Even though the audio ends with a beep, and it feels sudden, you’ll get a moment to select your answer. Use it wisely. Re-read the options before making your final selection.

Scoring Tips

– Only one correct answer.

– No partial marks.

– Getting it wrong won’t affect your score in other sections, but every correct answer helps boost your Listening score.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

– Not concentrating till the end: Many candidates lose focus halfway through. Stay alert.

– Choosing based on sound: Just because a word “sounds right” doesn’t mean it fits. Use meaning and logic.

– Guessing randomly: Use elimination if you’re unsure. Even a 50/50 guess is better than random clicking.

“Select Missing Word” might seem minor, but with consistent practice, it’s one of the easiest places to gain marks quickly. Focus on meaning, listen actively, and always consider the tone and structure of the sentence.
