IELTS WRITING MARKING CRITERIA

IELTS WRITING MARKING CRITERIA

The IELTS Writing test is evaluated based on four main criteria, each contributing 25% to the total band score. These criteria apply to both Task 1 and Task 2, although Task 2 carries more weight in the final writing band. Understanding each criterion in depth can help you focus your preparation and improve your overall writing performance.

1. Task Achievement (Task 1) / Task Response (Task 2)

This criterion assesses how well you fulfill the requirements of the task.

In Task 1:

– You must summarize the key features of the given graph, chart, map, or diagram.

– The report should be fact-based, with no opinions.

– You must select and compare relevant data clearly and appropriately.

– Avoid simply listing data; instead, group and compare important trends or changes.

In Task 2:

– This measures how well you respond to the essay question.

– You must present a clear opinion (if asked), develop ideas logically, and support them with relevant examples or arguments.

– It’s important to fully address all parts of the question and maintain a clear position throughout the essay.

– Weak argumentation, going off-topic, or missing parts of the question will lower your score.

Common issues:

– Incomplete answers

– Lack of clarity or relevance

– Unsupported ideas

– Misinterpreting the task

2. Coherence and Cohesion

This criterion evaluates the logical organization of your ideas and the use of linking devices.

Coherence:

– Refers to how logically ideas are arranged and connected.

– Your writing should follow a clear structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

– Each paragraph should contain a central idea and develop it fully.

Cohesion:

– Refers to how well your sentences and paragraphs are linked together.

– Use a range of cohesive devices such as linking words (however, moreover, in contrast), referencing (this, these, such), and transitions to guide the reader.

– Limited word range

– Repetitive use of basic vocabulary

– Incorrect word choice or usage

Tip: Don’t use overly complex words if you’re unsure of their meaning—clarity is more important than sounding sophisticated.

This criterion focuses on the variety and correctness of your grammar.

– Use a range of grammatical structures, such as different tenses, passive voice, conditionals, and complex sentences.

– Sentence variety is important—don’t rely only on simple sentences.
