Dos and Donts for IELTS reading

**~~Things to remember while appearing for IELTS exam~~**

First and foremost thing you should remember in IELTS reading test is to read the instruction given above every section of the exam. These instructions guide about what you are supposed to do in the given set of questions like in how many words you should answer, can you use any option more than once or what type of answer is required. So, you should follow the instructions strictly to avoid any problem.

Second thing is to look or scan the paragraph carefully to search the matching words or their synonyms as in the question. For this read all the questions carefully and mark some keywords in them so that while reading the passage you can easily find the same word or their synonyms to get the answer.

Another thing you should not commit spelling or any grammatical mistake as in short answer question your answer should be grammatically correct or you will be penalized for it.

Normally it is seen that the students practice from test papers and think this will help them in scoring good grades. I think you should read newspapers, magazines, journals and books as this material have variety of vocabulary which can hike your performance in reading. You might be thinking what is the role of vocabulary in reading? Answer is ,in reading test the words used in questions and in paragraph are paraphrased or variety of synonyms are used and if you have a treasure of vocabulary you can easily find the things which are related and can get the answer quickly.

You should be familiar of different types of questions asked in IELTS reading test and the ways to solve them in short time. So practice and discuss every problem you are facing in your training sessions.

~~** Do’s **~~

– Time is the enemy of the test taker so you should keep an eye on it and not spend much time on a single answer for which you are not getting any answer. You should directly write your answers on the answer sheet as no extra time is given to transfer the answers means you have only 60 minutes for the reading task.

– If you are not getting answer for any question leave it as you should not waste your time finding it put a mark on it and at the end of the test try again to solve it.

– Read the title and subtitle of the passage so that you can get an idea of what must be in the paragraph.

Read the passage quickly and underline the keywords so that you can easily find and match with the questions.

– If you see some new words try to understand their meaning by reading the whole sentence.

– Answers should be in the word limit as given in instruction: if you are asked for “NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS”, for example, then do not write more.

– Concentrate on the spellings as wrong spelled words will lead to loss of marks.

~~** Don’ts **~~

– Don’t read the whole passage again and again by this practice you will waste your time. Read the questions and find them in the passage. Use scanning and skimming method.

– Don’t start reading the passage from the beginning for every question when you know the information for the question will be in order.

– Don’t get stressed if you find any new word in the passage just try to understand the sense of the word.

– Don’t write the answers on the question paper instead write directly on the answer sheet.
