IELTS ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1
The graph below shows the area of land from which grain was harvested.

SAMPLE ANSWER
The line graph illustrates the changes in the global area of land used for harvesting grain between 1950 and 2000, measured in millions of hectares.
Overall, the harvested area increased steadily from 1950 until the early 1980s, after which it fluctuated slightly and eventually stabilized. Notable global and regional events appear to have influenced these trends.
In 1950, around 620 million hectares of land were used. This figure rose gradually, reaching approximately 700 million hectares by the mid-1970s. The rise during the late 1950s is likely linked to the USSR’s Virgin Lands Program, while the sharp increase in the early 1970s coincided with the doubling of global grain prices.
After peaking at around 730 million hectares in the early 1980s, the harvested area began to decline slightly, which may reflect global retrenchment in agriculture. From the late 1980s onwards, the figures stabilized at just above 700 million hectares until 2000.
