IELTS WRITING TASK 2

In the future, knowing more than one language will no longer be as important as now. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

SAMPLE ANSWER

I agree with the statement that soon it will be less important to be able to speak more than one language. Certainly, this is already the case in large countries that are dominated by one language, such as the USA or Japan, where there is virtually no need for a second language at all. A person is able to fully function within these societies with, in these specific examples, just English and Japanese. In other countries and regions, more people do speak multiple languages and in order for people to coexist effectively and harmoniously, knowledge of more than one language is a great benefit. English is often the second language of choice due to its wide use in business and politics.

Technology is going to change all this. In the next few years, sophisticated instant language translation systems are going to change the way people communicate forever. When someone speaks, the listener will actually hear what is said in any language of their choosing. All it will require is a smartphone or its equivalent. The technological capability already exists for this, and it is just a matter of the development of cheaper and more compact software until everyone has access to this instant translation system.

It will mean that human language interpreters will no longer be required at the United Nations, and business meetings conducted between people who speak different languages will no longer need assistance from translators. Computers will automatically translate what we hear, similarly to the way films are dubbed into other languages now, but in real time.

Of course, people will still choose to learn multiple languages, but the necessity for it will be reduced, as we will all be able to speak and understand what will be a kind of computer-managed international language. Knowing more than one language will probably not disappear, as more than half the current world population speaks more than one language already, but it will no longer be very necessary.
