IELTS WRITING TASK 2
It is often said that we should work to live, not live to work. Discuss both points of view and give your own opinion.
SAMPLE ANSWER
In today’s fast-paced world, opinions differ on whether people should treat work as the main purpose of life or simply as a means to enjoy life. While some believe that work should be the central focus, others argue that life should be lived beyond professional commitments.
Those who believe in living to work argue that work gives life meaning and purpose. A successful career brings not only financial stability but also personal satisfaction and social recognition. For instance, individuals who are passionate about their jobs, such as doctors or artists, often find joy and identity in their profession. Moreover, dedication to work can lead to innovation and progress in society.
On the other hand, many people believe that we should work to live, not live to work. They argue that excessive work pressure can cause stress and harm physical and mental health. Life should include time for family, hobbies, and relaxation. After all, money and success lose their value if a person is unhappy or unhealthy. Work should support life’s pleasures rather than dominate them.
In my opinion, balance is essential. While hard work is necessary to achieve goals, it should not come at the cost of personal happiness. People should work efficiently to maintain a comfortable lifestyle and still have time to enjoy life’s moments with loved ones.
