IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some companies now allow employees to bring their pets to the workplace. While some people support this idea, others think it is unprofessional and distracting.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
SAMPLE ANSWER
In recent years, a number of companies have introduced pet-friendly policies, allowing employees to bring their animals to the workplace. While some believe this can boost morale and reduce stress, others argue that it creates distractions and is inappropriate in a professional setting. This essay will explore both perspectives before offering my own view.
On one hand, supporters of pet-friendly offices highlight the emotional and psychological benefits. Pets, particularly dogs, have been shown to reduce stress and increase overall happiness. Allowing them into the workplace can create a more relaxed and positive environment, which may, in turn, improve employee satisfaction and productivity. Furthermore, such policies may help employees avoid the stress of leaving their pets at home for long hours, especially for those who live alone or have limited pet care options.
On the other hand, critics argue that pets in the workplace can be highly distracting. Animals may bark, require attention, or disrupt meetings, which could affect workflow and professionalism. Allergies, phobias, and cultural sensitivities are also valid concerns, as not all employees are comfortable around animals. Additionally, some workplaces, especially those involving food, healthcare, or customer service, may face health and safety risks by allowing pets on the premises.
In my opinion, while the idea of a pet-friendly office is appealing, it must be implemented thoughtfully. A balanced approach—such as designated pet days or pet zones—could offer benefits without compromising the professional environment.
In conclusion, although bringing pets to work can enhance well-being, careful planning and clear guidelines are essential to address potential drawbacks.
