IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Health services are a basic necessity. However, private companies have made them quite costly for ordinary individuals. Do the advantages of private health care outweigh its disadvantages?
SAMPLE ANSWER
Health care is a fundamental need in any society, yet the growing involvement of private companies has significantly increased the cost of medical treatment, making it unaffordable for many. While private health care does offer some advantages, I believe the disadvantages outweigh the benefits.
On the one hand, private health care services often provide faster access to treatment, higher quality facilities, and a broader choice of doctors and specialists. For those who can afford it, this can result in quicker diagnoses, better comfort, and more personalised care. In emergencies or serious illnesses, such efficiency can be life-saving. Furthermore, private hospitals often invest more in advanced technologies and modern equipment, improving the overall standard of care.
However, the downside is that private health care is usually beyond the financial reach of ordinary individuals. It creates inequality, where the rich receive premium treatment, while the poor often have to rely on overburdened public hospitals. This division can lead to poorer health outcomes for disadvantaged populations. In addition, the profit-driven nature of private health care may encourage unnecessary treatments or prioritise money over patient welfare.
In conclusion, although private health care offers certain benefits in terms of quality and speed, its high cost and tendency to create inequality in access make it less favorable overall. Governments should focus on strengthening public health systems to ensure that quality medical care is accessible to all, not just those who can afford to pay for it.
