IELTS Writing Task 2

In the field of language education, the role of feedback is critical to a student’s progress. Some believe that teachers should focus primarily on praising students for their good work instead of criticising their mistakes. While I agree that positive feedback plays a vital role in motivation and confidence-building, I believe a balanced approach is more beneficial for effective learning.

Positive reinforcement helps learners feel encouraged and appreciated, especially when tackling a challenging subject like a new language. Recognising students’ efforts and improvements fosters a safe and supportive learning environment. It also boosts self-esteem, which can lead to increased participation and a more proactive attitude towards learning.

However, avoiding criticism altogether may hinder improvement. Constructive criticism, when delivered appropriately, helps students identify specific errors and learn from them. Without understanding their mistakes, learners are likely to repeat them. For instance, if a student consistently uses incorrect verb tenses and receives no correction, their progress may stagnate despite other achievements.

The key lies in how feedback is delivered. Instead of harsh or discouraging criticism, teachers should use supportive language and suggest improvements. For example, saying “Great sentence structure, but try to use the past tense here” is more effective than simply stating that the sentence is wrong.

In conclusion, while positive feedback is essential to encourage and inspire language learners, constructive criticism is equally important to address weaknesses. Therefore, I believe teachers should adopt a balanced approach that includes both praise and helpful correction.
