IELTS WRITING TASK 2
The money used to fund space research would be better used to solve the many problems we face on Earth. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
While some believe that the vast sums spent on space exploration would be better allocated to addressing urgent issues on Earth, I partially disagree with this viewpoint. Although solving terrestrial problems should remain a top priority, investment in space research also brings significant long-term benefits that cannot be overlooked.
On one hand, the world is grappling with a multitude of pressing problems, such as poverty, climate change, lack of access to healthcare, and education inequalities. Billions of people lack clean water, sufficient food, and basic shelter. Given these crises, it is understandable that many people believe that public funds should be directed towards improving living conditions and promoting sustainable development.
However, space research contributes to addressing some of these challenges. Technological advancements made through space programs often lead to innovations in medicine, weather forecasting, disaster management, and telecommunications. For example, satellite technology enables accurate tracking of hurricanes, helping save lives in vulnerable regions. Furthermore, space research fosters international cooperation and drives scientific discovery, pushing the boundaries of human knowledge and inspiring future generations.
In conclusion, while it is crucial to address the urgent problems facing humanity, completely redirecting space research funds would be short-sighted. Instead, a balanced approach that continues to support both space exploration and sustainable development on Earth is the most beneficial path forward.
