IELTS WRITING TASK 2
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Science has long been a cornerstone of human progress, and its applications span countless fields. While it serves many purposes, I strongly agree that the most important goal of science should be to improve people’s lives.
Firstly, science plays a crucial role in enhancing health and well-being. Medical research has led to vaccines, antibiotics, and treatments that have saved millions of lives and improved the quality of life for many others. Innovations like MRI machines, robotic surgery, and genetic testing have revolutionized healthcare and made early diagnosis and treatment possible.
Secondly, science improves daily living by providing solutions to everyday problems. Technological advancements in communication, transportation, and agriculture have made life more convenient and productive. For example, renewable energy research not only helps protect the environment but also ensures a sustainable future for upcoming generations.
However, some argue that science should also focus on theoretical knowledge and exploration, such as space research or particle physics. While these areas are intellectually valuable and may lead to long-term benefits, they often have indirect impacts on everyday life compared to applied sciences.
In conclusion, although science has multiple goals, its primary mission should be to enhance human life. Whether it’s through better healthcare, sustainable living, or practical innovations, the direct benefits to people’s lives make this the most meaningful application of scientific effort.
