Traffic and housing problems in large cities could be addressed by moving large companies and factories and their employees to the countryside. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

SAMPLE ANSWER

In recent years, urban areas have faced mounting challenges related to traffic congestion and housing shortages. Some believe that relocating large companies and factories, along with their employees, to rural areas could ease these problems. I partially agree with this view, as while it could provide some relief, there are also potential drawbacks to consider.

On the one hand, decentralising industries could significantly reduce the population density in cities. As businesses move out, fewer people would commute to urban centres, which could help decrease traffic congestion. Additionally, the demand for urban housing would likely decline, easing pressure on real estate markets and lowering living costs. This shift could also promote economic development in rural areas by creating new job opportunities and improving infrastructure.

On the other hand, relocating large companies is not always practical. Many businesses rely on proximity to other firms, suppliers, or ports that are often located in urban hubs. Moving them could disrupt supply chains and reduce efficiency. Moreover, not all employees may be willing or able to relocate due to family, education, or lifestyle reasons. The move could also lead to urban decline if cities lose too much of their economic base.

In conclusion, while moving large companies and factories to the countryside could help reduce traffic and housing pressures in cities, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. A more balanced approach—such as encouraging remote work, improving public transport, and developing suburban areas—may offer more sustainable and inclusive outcomes.
