IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some people argue that parents should have a strong influence on their children’s choice of friends and life partners. Others believe that young people should make these decisions independently. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Parents undeniably play a crucial role in shaping their children’s lives, and some believe this influence should extend to choosing friends and life partners. Proponents of this view argue that parents have more life experience and can often foresee the consequences of certain relationships. They may help their children avoid friendships with negative influences or partners who may not be a good match in the long term. Additionally, in cultures where family values are prioritized, parental guidance in such matters is seen as essential to maintaining harmony and tradition.
On the other hand, many argue that young people should have the freedom to choose their friends and life partners independently. Friendships and romantic relationships are deeply personal, and individuals are more likely to be happy and satisfied if they make these choices themselves. Moreover, young adults today are often more informed and emotionally mature, making them capable of making sound decisions. Excessive parental control can also lead to resentment, lack of confidence, or even rebellion.
In my opinion, while parents’ advice can be valuable, the final decision should rest with the young individual. Striking a balance is key — young people should feel free to make their own choices, but also be open to considering their parents’ perspectives. This approach respects the independence of the youth while acknowledging the wisdom of experience.
In conclusion, both viewpoints have merit, but empowering young people to make their own decisions with parental support, rather than control, is the most balanced solution.
