IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Because of the global economy, many goods including what we use as daily basics produced by other countries have to be transported for a long distance. To what extent do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In today’s globalized economy, it is increasingly common for everyday goods, including basic necessities, to be produced in one country and transported over long distances to consumers in another. While this trend offers certain economic advantages, I believe the disadvantages outweigh the benefits.
On the one hand, importing goods from abroad can lead to greater consumer choice and cost efficiency. Countries can specialize in producing what they are most efficient at, leading to lower production costs and more affordable prices for consumers. For instance, tropical fruits like bananas or coffee can be grown more cheaply in equatorial regions and exported worldwide, allowing people in colder climates to enjoy them year-round.
However, the disadvantages are significant. Long-distance transportation contributes to environmental problems due to carbon emissions from ships, planes, and trucks. This undermines global efforts to combat climate change. Additionally, reliance on imported goods can harm local industries, leading to job losses and economic dependence on foreign suppliers. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerabilities of global supply chains when many countries experienced shortages of basic goods due to disrupted transport routes.
Furthermore, transporting goods across continents increases the risk of delays and quality degradation, especially for perishable items. It can also lead to cultural homogenization, where local traditions and products are displaced by foreign alternatives.
In conclusion, while there are some benefits to the international movement of basic goods, the environmental impact, economic risks, and loss of local identity suggest that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
