IELTS Writing Task 2

Lately, it has been observed that recent graduates are easily becoming discouraged. They sometimes believe that the future is bleak and uncertain. Economic and social factors have contributed to this attitude. In this essay, I will discuss these factors and offer possible solutions.

First of all, it has become harder to find a job nowadays. As the unemployment rate continues to soar, competition for jobs is becoming fierce. This has caused intense economic and social pressure on students. Quite often, a student’s family advises them to study hard because doing so pays off in the future in the form of obtaining a good job. This incentive may be effective for excellent students but causes lower self-esteem for hard-working average performers in school. These students sometimes feel that they are not good enough for the society. This belief is often affirmed when they find themselves jobless after graduation.

University graduates today have to directly compete with other graduates for jobs, as well as with other experienced workers. Even worse, they must also compete with foreign labourers. In other words, in this era of globalisation, the world has grown smaller and getting ahead in life is a challenge. Oftentimes this makes graduates feel that their futures are bleak.

Needless to say, there are solutions available to remedy the discussed concerns. For one, people in society should change their mindsets. To elaborate, there is too much focus on attaining degrees and getting highly paid jobs. In fact, some very promising jobs do not even require college degrees. Those finishing vocational courses are good examples of having minimal academic achievement yet possessing great potential to have a big career someday.

Another solution to alleviating the stress on our graduates is to lessen our expectations of them. People need to set more realistic expectations on young people today because people perform better when they are inspired than when they are acting out of fear or consciousness.

Simply put, today’s graduates find it hard to look and compete for employment and that is why they are easily discouraged. Society must also change their expectations and mindsets to support these struggling graduates. Such changes will result in a healthy and positive outlook for all people.
