IELTS WRITING TASK 2
In some countries, people who commit less serious crimes are made to undertake community service* instead of a prison sentence. Some people believe that all people who have committed a crime should be sent to prison.
Do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In some countries, individuals who commit minor crimes are assigned community service instead of serving a prison sentence. While some believe that all offenders should be imprisoned, I strongly disagree with this view. Alternative punishments, such as community service, can be more effective for minor offenses and beneficial for both individuals and society.
Firstly, community service can serve as an effective means of rehabilitation. Many people who commit minor crimes, such as vandalism or petty theft, do so due to difficult circumstances rather than serious criminal intent. By engaging in constructive activities like cleaning public spaces or assisting the elderly, they can learn valuable lessons and reintegrate into society. In contrast, imprisonment may expose them to hardened criminals, increasing the risk of reoffending.
Secondly, prisons are already overcrowded, and incarcerating minor offenders only adds to the burden on taxpayers. Instead of spending government funds on maintaining prisoners, resources can be directed towards education and rehabilitation programs. This approach not only reduces crime rates in the long run but also ensures that prison spaces are reserved for dangerous criminals who pose a real threat to society.
However, it is important to ensure that community service is strictly monitored. Offenders should complete their assigned duties responsibly to prevent any misuse of this alternative sentencing.
In conclusion, not all criminals should be sent to prison. Community service offers a more practical and rehabilitative solution for minor offenses, ultimately benefiting both individuals and society as a whole.
