IELTS Writing Task 2

There is an ongoing debate about how children should spend their free time. Some believe that structured activities, such as sports and music lessons, are beneficial, while others argue that children should have the freedom to play and explore independently. Both perspectives have valid points, which will be discussed in this essay before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, organised activities provide numerous benefits for children. Firstly, participation in structured programs helps develop discipline, teamwork, and time management skills. For example, children who engage in team sports learn the value of cooperation and perseverance, which are essential life skills. Secondly, these activities can enhance cognitive and creative abilities. Music lessons, for instance, have been shown to improve memory and concentration. Additionally, organised activities keep children engaged in positive pursuits, reducing the likelihood of them engaging in unproductive or harmful activities.

On the other hand, unstructured play is crucial for a child’s development. Free play fosters creativity and problem-solving skills, as children invent games and navigate social interactions without adult intervention. Moreover, exploration allows children to develop independence and resilience. For instance, when children play outdoors, they learn to assess risks and make decisions on their own. Furthermore, an over-scheduled lifestyle can lead to stress and burnout, depriving children of the opportunity to relax and enjoy their childhood.

In my opinion, a balanced approach is ideal. While structured activities offer significant benefits, children should also have sufficient free time to play and explore. A combination of both ensures holistic development, allowing children to acquire essential skills while also nurturing their creativity and independence. Parents and educators should strive to create a schedule that provides structure without overwhelming the child.

In conclusion, both organised activities and free play contribute to a child’s growth in different ways. Striking a balance between the two can help children develop into well-rounded individuals, equipped with both discipline and creativity.
