IELTS Writing Task 2

Many parents today place significant pressure on their children to succeed academically, socially, or in extracurricular activities. While this pressure often stems from a desire for their children to have successful futures, the extent to which it affects the child’s well-being and development is a matter of concern.

I agree to some extent that parents’ expectations can be overwhelming. In many cultures, academic excellence is seen as the key to securing a prosperous future. As a result, parents often push their children to achieve high grades, excel in sports, and participate in various extracurricular activities. This can lead to stress, burnout, and a sense of inadequacy if children feel they are constantly falling short of their parents’ expectations.

However, it is important to recognize that not all pressure is harmful. Some level of encouragement and expectation can motivate children to strive for success and develop discipline. Parents who set high standards for their children can instill a sense of responsibility and determination. Additionally, when expectations are realistic and accompanied by emotional support, children may feel empowered rather than burdened.

In conclusion, while the pressure to succeed can have negative effects if it is excessive or unrealistic, moderate levels of support and encouragement can be beneficial for a child’s growth. Parents should strive to balance their expectations with understanding and support to help their children reach their potential in a healthy way.
