IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some people think that space exploration is a waste of resources, while others think that it is essential for mankind to continue to explore the universe in which we live. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Space exploration has long been a topic of debate. On one hand, critics argue that the resources spent on exploring outer space could be better used to address urgent issues here on Earth. For instance, billions of dollars are invested in space missions, which could instead be directed toward combating poverty, improving healthcare, or tackling climate change. They contend that these immediate concerns should take precedence over venturing into space, where the benefits remain speculative and distant.
On the other hand, supporters of space exploration argue that it is essential for humanity’s future. They point out that many technological advancements, such as GPS, satellite communications, and medical technologies, were initially developed for space missions but have since been adapted for use on Earth. Moreover, exploring space helps us to better understand our planet and the universe, potentially leading to solutions for problems like resource shortages or environmental challenges. Space exploration also fuels scientific curiosity and inspires innovation, which can have far-reaching benefits in other sectors.
In my opinion, while it is important to address pressing issues on Earth, space exploration should not be viewed as a waste. Rather, it offers the potential for long-term gains in technology, knowledge, and even the survival of humanity. Striking a balance between addressing immediate concerns and investing in space exploration seems to be the most logical approach, as the two need not be mutually exclusive.
In conclusion, both views have merit, but space exploration plays a vital role in advancing human progress and should continue, alongside efforts to solve terrestrial problems.
