Nowadays, many people choose to eat more organic foods thinking they are healthier. Why do you think people prefer organic foods? Is this a positive or negative development?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In recent years, there has been a notable surge in the consumption of organic foods as people increasingly associate them with enhanced health benefits. This growing preference for organic choices can result from people’s belief that this type of food contains the lowest amount of toxins compared to other types of food, and I believe it is a negative development because of the following reasons.
One of the reasons behind the preference for organic food is the belief that it is produced with a minimum amount of toxins. Organic foods typically lack harmful agricultural chemicals, such as pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. For instance, organic fruits and vegetables often have higher levels of antioxidants and nutrients compared to conventionally grown produce. Consequently, if people consume more organic foods, they are less likely to be exposed to toxins. This potentially leads to improved health and a decreased risk of toxinrelated illnesses.
In my opinion, organic foods present both benefits and challenges, but its drawbacks are more considerable. One of the benefits is its positive impact on environmental health. Organic farming practices, which avoid the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, lead to healthier soil and less groundwater contamination. A clear example is that in organic vineyards, the use of natural methods over chemicals has resulted in better soil quality and biodiversity, leading to not only healthier produce but also the preservation of local ecosystems.
However, a major concern is the higher cost of organic produce including fruits and vegetables compared to conventional alternatives. This price differential poses a financial burden on consumers, especially those with limited budgets. This may lead to the fact that the accessibility of organic food becomes a privilege for wealthier individuals, creating a socioeconomic divide in access to healthier dietary options and contributing to the perpetuation of less healthy eating habits among lower-income groups.
In conclusion, the rising trend of organic food consumption may stem from the belief that this kind of food consists of a minimum amount of harmful substance. Although this trend may contribute to environmental protection, I believe its downside including high cost is more significant, so it is more a negative trend.
