IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some people think that parents should plan their children’s leisure time carefully. Others believe that children should decide for themselves how to spend their free time. What is your opinion on this matter?
SAMPLE ANSWER
In today’s society, there is ongoing debate over whether parents should plan their children’s leisure time or allow them to decide how they spend it. While both sides have valid points, I believe that a balanced approach, where children have some autonomy but are guided by their parents, is the most effective.
On one hand, parents who carefully plan their children’s free time can ensure that they engage in constructive activities that promote learning, physical health, and social development. Structured leisure activities, such as reading, sports, or family outings, provide children with opportunities to develop new skills, foster creativity, and spend quality time with loved ones. Moreover, parents can help their children avoid excessive screen time or other unproductive habits by offering alternatives that benefit their overall well-being.
On the other hand, allowing children to make their own decisions about how to spend their leisure time helps them develop independence, decision-making skills, and personal responsibility. In an environment where children have the freedom to choose their activities, they are more likely to explore their interests and hobbies, which can contribute to their emotional and social growth. This sense of autonomy is crucial for preparing them for adulthood, where they will need to manage their own schedules and priorities.
In conclusion, while parents should guide and encourage their children, it is equally important for children to have the freedom to choose their own leisure activities. A balanced approach allows children to benefit from both structured guidance and personal freedom, helping them grow into well-rounded individuals.
