IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Some people think that it is very important to get a university education. Others feel we should encourage more young people to take up a trade such as plumbing, painting or building to ensure a good balance of skills in our society.
Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
SAMPLE ANSWER
For some people, going to university is a goal in itself, regardless of where it takes them. They aim for this, or for a professional career, because they follow their parents, or equally because their parents did not have this opportunity and want it for their children. But is everyone who studies at university doing what is right for him or her? And do we need all these qualified people?
Of course a functioning society needs to have a balance of skilled people. We need doctors and dentists to look after our health, historians and teachers to inform us, and engineers to design roads and computer programs. But we also need plumbers and builders and IT specialists, and many others, to build and maintain everything.
In many developed countries fewer and fewer people are encouraged to take up a trade, because they are told that university is smarter. Usually, if you are successful at university, you can get a well-paid job, though there is no guarantee of this. However, a trade can provide great job satisfaction and good wages because there is such a shortage of skilled people.
Some countries have a policy of training people in technical schools from a young age. In my country, for instance, we have two types of secondary school and you choose quite early which path you want to take, and I think this is good.
In my opinion everyone has his or her role to play in society and we should encourage people to do what suits them best. On top of this, though, we also need to make sure that society respects a technical education as highly as an academic one, so that everyone feels valued.
