I think technology has completely transformed our lifestyle. From how we communicate and shop to how we work and learn—everything is digital now. We’re more connected than ever, but also more distracted. So while the changes are profound, they come with both benefits and challenges.

So, it’s important to pursue progress responsibly.

One night I clearly remember struggling to sleep was about three months ago, just before an important job interview. I had applied for a position at a reputed multinational company, and the interview was scheduled early the next morning.

The reason behind my sleeplessness was anxiety and overthinking. I was constantly rehearsing possible interview questions and imagining various outcomes. Technology plays a significant role in disrupting sleep. The blue light emitted by smartphones, tablets, and computers tricks the brain into thinking it’s still daytime, which delays the release of melatonin. Moreover, notifications and social media keep people mentally engaged long after they should be winding down. For instance, many people scroll through Instagram or watch videos in bed, often losing track of time, which cuts into their sleep hours. On the other hand, some apps and devices help improve sleep by offering guided meditation, white noise, or sleep tracking, so the effect isn’t entirely negative.

Traditionally, children are believed to sleep better than adults because their bodies are growing and require more rest. However, in today’s world, many children also face disturbed sleep due to overstimulation from electronic gadgets, irregular routines, or academic stress. That said, adults are generally more prone to chronic sleeplessness due to financial responsibilities, health concerns, or job pressures. In contrast, children tend to fall asleep quickly once they’re tired, unless they’re affected by poor habits like using screens before bedtime.

Yes, it’s becoming a serious public health issue in my country. With the increasing pace of life, people often sacrifice sleep to meet deadlines or manage multiple responsibilities. Many students, especially those preparing for competitive exams, report getting only 4 to 5 hours of sleep daily. Working professionals in urban areas also suffer from long commuting hours, which further reduces their time for rest. As a result, there’s been a rise in issues like obesity, depression, high blood pressure, and low productivity. The healthcare system is also noticing a spike in sleep-related disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea.

What can people do to improve their sleep quality?

There are many simple but effective strategies. First, people should maintain a consistent sleep schedule, going to bed and waking up at the same time every day—even on weekends. Secondly, it’s helpful to create a bedtime routine, such as dimming the lights, reading a book, or doing breathing exercises. Avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and screen exposure at least an hour before bed can make a big difference. Also, keeping the bedroom environment cool, dark, and quiet promotes better rest. For example, I personally find that drinking warm chamomile tea and journaling before bed help me relax and sleep deeply.
