One memorable night when I couldn’t sleep at all was about six months ago, during a particularly stressful period in my life.

IELTS Speaking Test

At the time, I was at home in my own bedroom. I had recently moved into a new apartment, and the change in environment, combined with the stress I was experiencing, seemed to amplify my insomnia.

The main reason I couldn’t sleep was due to a combination of stress and anxiety. I was dealing with a major work project that had a tight deadline, and the pressure was keeping me awake. My mind was racing with thoughts about the project and various worries about its outcome. Additionally, I had been adjusting to a new routine and new surroundings, which made it even harder for me to relax.

Not being able to sleep that night was incredibly frustrating and exhausting. I felt a mix of anxiety and helplessness as the hours ticked by, and I couldn’t find a way to calm my mind. The lack of sleep left me feeling drained the next day, and it made it even harder to tackle the challenges I was facing. Despite my efforts to try and rest, the night seemed endless, and I struggled with a sense of discomfort and irritation. Ultimately, it was a reminder of how important it is to manage stress and create a conducive environment for relaxation.

IELTS Speaking Test

What did you do to try and fall asleep that night?

To try and fall asleep, I tried various relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation. I also attempted to read a book and listen to calming music, but nothing seemed to work. I eventually got out of bed and did some light stretching, hoping it would help me unwind, but I was still unable to drift off.

How did the lack of sleep affect your performance the next day?

The lack of sleep significantly impacted my performance the next day. I felt sluggish and found it difficult to concentrate on my work. My productivity dropped, and I was more irritable than usual. It became clear how crucial a good night’s sleep is for maintaining both mental and physical well-being.

IELTS Speaking Test

Have you had any strategies for dealing with sleepless nights since then?

Since that experience, I’ve developed a few strategies to handle sleepless nights better. I try to establish a consistent sleep routine and create a relaxing bedtime ritual. I’ve also been working on managing my stress levels through mindfulness and regular exercise. If I do find myself unable to sleep, I now avoid looking at screens and focus on calming activities like reading or gentle stretching.

Do you think there was a specific trigger for your sleeplessness, apart from stress?

Yes, aside from stress, I think the new environment played a significant role. Adjusting to a new apartment meant unfamiliar sounds and a different sleeping arrangement, which likely contributed to my sleeplessness. The combination of a new routine and ongoing stress created a perfect storm for insomnia.
