IELTS GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

You have lost your university degree certificate and need a replacement certificate to be issued. Write a letter to the president of your university. In your letter

– explain how you lost it

– say why you need a new one

– tell him/her what you’d like him/her to do?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Mr. J,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I have lost my certificate because I put it on the desk in my living room two days ago, and my mother accidentally threw it away while cleaning the house. I was able to recover it from the trash once I had realised what had happened; however, there were several stains on the certificate, making it unusable.

I need a new copy of my degree in order to apply for my higher studies at the University of Canada. I intend to complete my Master’s degree at this university, and when I tried applying with my other educational credentials, my application was returned to me as the degree is essential in order for my application to be processed successfully.

Would it be possible for you to issue me another copy of my degree certificate within the next five days, please? I have already completed the online form on the university website, but I am unable to wait the required 14 days for it to be processed because of the tight deadline for submitting my application. Would it be possible for me to come to the university this Friday to collect it in person?
