MATHS CLASSES IN JAPAN
Japanese mathematics lessons include a significant amount of problem solving. This instructional approach called structured problem solving is designed to create interest in mathematics and stimulate creative mathematical activity in the classroom through students’ collaborative work. The lesson usually starts with students working individually to solve a problem using their own mathematical knowledge. After working with problems, students bring various approaches and solutions to classroom discussion.
The teacher then leads students in a whole-class discussion in order to compare individual approaches and solutions. This whole-class activity provides students with opportunities to develop their mathematical abilities including conceptual and procedural understanding. In Japan, teachers appear to take a less active role, allowing their students to invent their own procedures for solving problems. Teacher, however, carefully design and orchestrate lessons. In Japan, problem solving is often viewed as a powerful approach for developing mathematical concepts and skills.

Using structured problem solving as a major instructional approach, Japanese mathematics lessons bear notable characteristics-firstly, carefully selected word problems and activities, and their cohesiveness; secondly, Extensive discussion (Neriage); thirdly, emphasis on blackboard practice (Bansho).
In the structured problem-solving approach, Japanese teachers emphasize that one of the most important roles of the teacher during a lesson is to facilitate mathematical discussion after each student comes up with a solution. When the teacher presents a problem to students without giving a procedure, it is natural that several different approaches to the solution will come from the students. Because the goal of the structured problem-solving approach is to develop students’ understanding of mathematical concepts and skills, a teacher is expected to facilitate mathematical discussion for students to achieve this goal.

ARCHEOLOGY ON EASTER ISLAND
Easter Island is a huge open-air museum. Archaeological sites are scattered throughout the island, and they give an idea of what their culture was like and the beliefs that their organization was based on. Work so far has revealed evidence of ceremonies and very large quantities of paint. The archaeologists believe the workers painted the statues as well as their own bodies. And recent digs have revealed just how the massive heads were carved, some of which tower more than 30 feet in height, from base to top, and weigh more than 80 tons. Discovering these places is quite a fascinating adventure worth living without haste.
Ahu Tongariki, the 15 moai statues
The contemplation of the imposing Ahu Tongariki with the Pacific Ocean on its back is the fulfilled dream of most travelers who cross the planet to reach Easter Island. The image of Tongariki, together with that of the statues of the nearby Rano Raraku volcano, is the one that has most spread in books, magazines and documentaries of Easter Island.

Paro moai
In the ceremonial center called Te Pito Kura is the only moai named Paro, which remains in the same position it was when it was demolished almost two centuries ago. The Paro Moai represents a milestone from the period when the statues were built, as it is the largest moai statue transported from the Rano Raraku volcano quarry and erected successfully on an ahu or platform. Its dimensions are spectacular as its ears measure 2 meters, its height reaches 10 meters and it is estimated that its weight must exceed 80 tons. The moai lies face down and his body is split in half as a result of his collapse.
The magnetic stone
It is a large ovoid shaped stone 80 centimeters in diameter. This singular stone according to legend was brought by Hotu Matu’a, the founding king of the Rapanui people, in his boat from Hiva, his native land. It is said that this rock, almost spherical and smooth, concentrates a magnetic and supernatural energy called Mana. Because of its high iron content, this stone warms up more than others and causes the compass to behave strangely. Many visitors put their hands on it to capture their energy or also, according to the belief of some, increase female fertility.
