The diagram shows how electricity is made in a hydroelectric power station.

Overall, the process happens in two main times, during the day and during the night. Water moves between two reservoirs to make and save electricity.

In the daytime, water from a river is kept in a high-level reservoir behind a dam. When the intake is open, water goes down through a tunnel to the power station. The force of water moves the turbines, and the generator produces electricity. After that, the electricity is sent by power lines to the national grid. The water then flows down into a low-level reservoir.

At night, the process is different. The intake is closed, and the turbines are used to pump the water back from the low-level reservoir to the high level one. This keeps the water ready for the next day to make more electricity.

In summary, the hydroelectric power station uses the same water again and again. It makes electricity in the day and saves energy at night by pumping water back up. The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and making comparisons where relevant.
