SAMPLE ANSWER
The table presents data on the proportion and number of people from different family types living in poverty in Australia in 1999.
Overall, sole parents and single individuals without children experienced the highest poverty rates, while aged couples and couples without children had the lowest. The total poverty rate across all households was 12%, affecting about 1.84 million people.
Sole parents had the highest poverty percentage at 21%, despite representing a smaller total number (232,000) than couples with children, where 13% (933,000) lived in poverty. Among singles without children, 19% (359,000) were poor, indicating a significant portion of that group was affected.
In contrast, only 4% of aged couples and 8% of single aged individuals lived in poverty, highlighting a relatively lower risk among the elderly. Couples without children had a slightly higher poverty rate at 7% (211,000).
This data reveals that single-parent and single-person households were more vulnerable to poverty in 1999.
