India has a range of imports and exports and a number of trading partners. Overall, India imports £25.6 billion worth of goods, compared to £21.2 billion worth of exports.
The biggest import item is machinery and equipment at £5.7 billion and a similar amount is spent on importing crude oil and related products. India’s other main import is gems -£1.9 billion worth – but it also exports £3.2 billion worth of gems and other jewellery. This, however, is the second biggest export. India’s biggest export is textiles at £5 billion, followed by handicrafts, at £3.7 billion. Other big exports include engineering products and chemicals.
As far as trading partners are concerned, India’s biggest partner for both imports and exports is the USA. 9.5% of imports come from there and 19.3% of exports, which is considerably more, go there. The UK is India’s second biggest trading partner and India also exports just over 5% of goods to Hong Kong and Japan, and imports a similar percentage of goods from Belgium and Germany.
