IELTS WRITING TASK 2
Paying all workers the same salary in a company promotes harmony and respect amongst colleagues. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE ANSWER
The idea of paying all employees the same salary to encourage harmony and respect may appear fair on the surface, but I strongly disagree with this notion. While equality is important in the workplace, compensation should be based on factors such as skills, experience, responsibility, and performance.
Firstly, not all roles within a company are equal in terms of complexity or responsibility. For example, a senior engineer or team leader typically carries more pressure and contributes at a strategic level compared to an entry-level assistant. Paying them the same would likely demotivate highly skilled workers and reduce their incentive to perform at their best. Over time, this could lead to decreased productivity and even staff turnover.
Secondly, rewarding everyone equally regardless of effort or output can create resentment rather than harmony. Employees who work harder or possess specialized skills may feel undervalued if their contributions are not financially recognized. This could actually breed tension among workers, defeating the purpose of promoting mutual respect.
That said, a fair and transparent pay structure is essential. Companies can promote respect by ensuring there is no discrimination and by offering equal opportunities for growth and advancement. Open communication about how salaries are determined can also help employees feel respected and fairly treated.
In conclusion, while the intention behind equal pay for all is noble, it is impractical and may even be counterproductive. A merit-based pay system that rewards individual contributions is more effective for ensuring workplace harmony and motivation.
