What to do if any unfamiliar question appear in IELTS Speaking

In IELTS speaking the question asked are mostly general and every student can answer it. Sometime the candidate can face some unexpected questions during speaking test. If this happens with you there is no need to panic as everyone doesn’t know everything about everything. Just be calm and try to answer the question in most suitable way you can.

In IELTS you can be asked questions like

“Would you like singing online lessons?”

“Where are good fishing spots in your country?”

So today we will discuss What to do if any unfamiliar question appear in IELTS Speaking

How to behave in such cases?

In such case don’t sit silent instead communicate with the examiner as this depicts that you know how to communicate in unexpected situations. You can directly say that the question is unusual and say something as this will help you to get assessment of Fluency & Coherence.

Another thing to remember examiner don’t expect only your experience, so you can share the experience of people from your friend circle – you can be straight forward and say that you did not have such an experience, but my friend did. And you can elaborate your friend’s experience. Examiner is not at all interested in whose experience you are sharing.  The only thing he is interested in is to hear an answer that sounds logical, has interesting vocabulary and grammar.

Use different phrases that will help express your feelings to a difficult or unexpected question for you. These phrases will reflect Fluency and indicate the examiner that you are fast to navigate the situation and have the necessary language tools in stock for such cases.

If the question seemed strange enough

That’s a weird question.

For example, it would be strange for me to ask the following question: What is your favorite flower?

Approximate answer: That’s a weird question. I don’t know! I buy flowers very rarely so it’s hard for me to say this. I think rose in the flower that I like the most. I like it because it’s a beautiful flower a token of love and it comes in various colors.

If the question requires a long answer, but you think that you don’t have much content to speak for a long time

That’s a really good question!

For example: What would you like to change in your city?

Approximate answer: That’s a really good question! I should say streets. Yes, streets in my city need repairing and broadening as they are too congested.

If you have never thought about the topic

Hmm, that’s an interesting topic to talk about, but I never thought about it.

Well, I really don’t know, but let’s see..

For example: Do young people like adventures sports in your country?

Sample answer: Hmm, that’s an interesting topic to talk about, but I never thought about it. I’m not an avid sports person, nor any of my friends. I think, adventurous sports are not the most popular thing to do among youth in my country. As there are very less space to perform this type of sports.

Important!

All the above said phrases should be said with the appropriate intonation – surprise, amazement, bewilderment. If you will say them like this then only they will sound natural, and not like memorized.

Hope these phrases will help you in facing the problem and you will get your desired band scores.

Thank You 🙂
