What tense you can use in IELTS writing task 1?

It is integral to know that which tense you can use in your writing task of IELTS writing. This page will explain about the tenses that you need to use in academic writing task 1 as well as in general training

Tenses and Dates

As it is the descriptive type, you will encounter the type of graph, map and pie chart in which numbers as well as different dates would be given. See the list below. This will let you to know which tense you can use: 

  • No Dates = present tense
  • Dates in the Past = Past Tense
  • Dates in the Future = Future Forms
  • Dates spanning both Past and Future = both
    Past Tense and Future Forms

Usage of passive voice

This is absolutely wrong as most of the students think that if they will use passive language, then they will score high band score. One can use passive language only if it is appropriate and it is needed to use in it. All of the writing task wouldn’t give you this opportunity. Unless you get a diagram as it is a mixture of active and passive.

One difference that is used to assess this task is task achievement. Otherwise your task is assessed as like the academic test. The IELTS examiner will mark you on the following (each worth 25% of task

  • Vocabulary: Collocations, Spelling and
  • Accuracy
  • Grammar: Sentence structure, tenses, punctuation, grammar range and accuracy

Students of general training will use the range of tenses and their task as it depends upon the task aim and purpose.

  • (future form and future passive)
  • I had hoped that … (past perfect)
