Vocabulary Role in Language Learning
Having a broad knowledge of vocabulary in your target language assists you to support the four components:- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
“There is no end of vocabulary in itself”. Fancy Vocabulary makes the skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing much easier to perform.
Role of rich Vocabulary in Reading
Vocabulary knowledge is considered as the most important aspect, when it comes to reading comprehension, both for native speakers and non -native speakers.
For instance, if you start to read a Novel but you confront problems in understanding the word and do alot of struggle to find the meaning of the text. This can be disappointing, discouraging and also burst your confidence level .
It has been recorded that the astonishingly 65% of variance in the reading score was noticed only because of the vocabulary size.

Role of Vocabulary in Listening
Similar evidence can be observed in Listening by the language candidates for genuine reasons.
It is clear that you face trouble to recognize and decode the sounds of the word that you have never heard before .
If you’re an advanced language learner, you might be able to make word sense through the context or by relating it to other words in the same word family, but this can be difficult.

The role of rich Vocabulary in Speaking
If you are a native speaker, you are likelihood to experience a time when you can’t remember the exact word but that particular word is ‘on the tip of your tongue’. It can be frustrating and cut the conversation short beacuse you will be unable to convey the message.
For that particular reason, Vocabulary knowledge is widely considered to be perhaps the most pivotal element when it relates with the ability of person to be a native foreign speaker.
A large vocabulary can be a worthwhile instrument to reach greater heights of language fluency.
Take it in a simple manner, the more vocabulary you know, the easier it will become to perfect in language skills.
A good example of this is the word, ‘unhappy’ . If we break down this word, we have [un-] and [happy]. If we know that the prefix [un] is an inductional morpheme (i.e….it inverts the meaning of the morpheme it’s attached to), then we can work out the meaning of the word itself.
As you have seen above, a wide Vocabulary is associated with a wider performance across all the language skills .
It’s integral to note that this applies to both native an non-native speaker and second language students. This is the reason why we motivate children to read widely in their native languages the broader their vocabulary, the higher their chances to perform well academically.
To sum up,
Vocabulary is clearly important for learning the language as it nurture all other language skills, it can be a stepping stone to high level language use and can help the student to achieve fluency quicker.
Nevertheless, this isn’t the whole story. There are a number of other factors which influence language ability that we will be addressing in upcoming blogs.
THANK YOU:)
