Matching questions in IELTS Reading is the most confusing and majority of the students fail to locate the write answers or waste too much time in finding the answers. This question type in IELTS Reading can be easily solved if one can implement some learnt tips. So today in this article we will disclose some Tips to solve Matching Questions in IELTS Reading.
There are only 3 types of question in the matching questions.
1. Matching headings
2. Name matching
3. Matching sentence ending
1. In the first one you have a list of sentence or headings which you need to match with text or paragraph. These types of questions challenge you to find what each paragraph is about. This is the only type of question in the reading passage that you see before the passage that’s because you need to answer these questions while you read not after you are finish the reading. In these types of questions the choices are paraphrased. This means each of choice is restated in other words using synonyms and antonyms with negative, expressions and descriptions. That’s because you are not likely to see the exact same words in the passage. After reading the first paragraph you need to go on to the questions. You need to check that what question contain the information of first passage. But most of the students read the question first than move to the paragraphs. It consumes lot of time. Also you will not be able to find the correct answer.
2. In the matching with names you have to match with the statement about what the person did or said. Firstly find all the names which are mentioned by scanning technique. Each time you see one of the names mentioned you should underline it so you can locate the correct place. Secondly, identify the keywords in the question statement and underline them. Then you need to think about the synonyms and paraphrases of these words. Start with the first name of the scientist and match with the questions. It’s too easy tip for the name of matching question.
3. In matching sentence ending type of questions you will be given a list of incomplete sentences with no endings and another ending with possible endings. Your work is to match the incomplete sentences with correct endings. You are being tested on your understanding of how the ideas in the sentences are connected to the main ideas in the reading text most of the students do mistakes in these questions because they answers these questions by logic and grammar and they don’t look at the reading text . They think that this helps to save the time but it is advised that you should not do this. You need to read the question first and understand what they asking for. Then you need to move to the paragraphs to find the location of these questions. Try to understand the meaning of location and match with the question. Your answers will be in the same order as in the text as they are in the question. Then, start with the incomplete sentences first before you look at the endings or the text. You have more endings than required, so looking for all these in details is the wastage of time. You need to highlight the information or keywords. It is often a good idea to highlight any names, dates, places. These are often easy to find in the reading. In this way you can easily predict the answer.
