
Tips for IELTS Speaking Test day
IELTS Speaking is a one to one interview with the examiner. In this test the examiner will ask you some questions of which you have to give answers in such a way that you can demonstrate your level of English to him. Many students get nervous and commit some common mistakes in the exam which reduce their scores. In today’s article we will give tips for IELTS Speaking test day which can improve your scores.’
1. Be formal
During your speaking test be formal treat it like a job interview and just as a job interview you will be on your best behavior. Don’t take it very casually take it seriously and be formal.
2. Give a full answer
Try to give full Explanation of question whenever it’s possible. In your speaking exam you have 10 or 15 minutes to use the best English that you know and that you are studied in all your life. So, obviously, you should to try to show off during your English test. When they ask you some questions in the first section about you, your family, about your background you should elaborate the answer instead of answering it in one or two words. For example, when examiner asks you “where are you from?” then don’t just say the name of your home town because that’s just one word give full answer of at least 1-2 sentences. Speaking to an extent show your grip on grammar, vocabulary and all other things that are mandatory to get good scores.
3. Be polite
If examiner asks you something which you don’t understand you can ask for the explanation in a polite way. Don’t say
“what”, “sorry”.
Instead say: – “excuse me” could you please repeat that? that’s also using appropriate words of English as the examiner is there to judge your English. Along with this, by being polite, you are not just showing that you know the English but also that you know the culture of the language which is being polite.
4. Maintain good posture
Your body posture always effect to your way of speaking. It affects your confidence, your way to communicate. So try to sit confidently in front of examiner without doing lots of body movements. Make sure that you sit straight and don’t put your hand anywhere on the face even if you are nervous.
5. Speak clearly
Don’t worry too much about your accent and as long as you do your best to pronounce the words clearly. If you need to improve your pronunciation work on that before your exam. If there are some very specific pronunciations errors that you tend to make or people from your country tend to make, work on those beforehand.
6. Use descriptive words
Don’t try to use boring words in your speaking, don’t overly used words, like “good”, “bad”, “okay”, “nice”. Try to use some exciting words, use dynamic words to show that you have rich vocabulary to express yourself in English.
6. Don’t speak to fast
You don’t have to speak fast in order to get high scores in speaking. You need to show the examiner that you can speak freely on any topic so you need to maintain this even pace throughout the exam and if you think that it may be more difficult for you to talk on certain topics. You should start talking more slowly from the very beginning because you know some people speak fast and slow by naturally because some people are habitual of it. So you can pretend you are a slow speaker and try to speak slowly from the beginning to maintain the fluency.
