International English language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the world’s prominent test to determine English language abilities of nonnative English speakers. The IELTS examination is designed to evaluate whether the candidates migrating for working or studying will be able to communicate in an English-speaking country. It is globally recognized test and managed by IDP in India. The examination consists of Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. However, 3 tests are taken on one day while the 4th section i.e. IELTS speaking is scheduled individually.
IELTS aspirant often find speaking module the most difficult module as they are unable to adjust in English-speaking environment. This is a face-to-face discussion or interaction with an Examiner. The band score ranges from 0to 9. Everything you need to know about IELTS speaking.
1_ The IELTS speaking section is the same for both IELTS Academic and General training.
2_ The band scores in the speaking module are awarded on the basis of 4 parameters: fluency, pronunciation, grammatical range and accuracy and lexical resources.
3_ There is nothing right or wrong in the speaking section. Applicants will not be marked negatively for any kind of response. The answers will be evaluated by trained and experienced examiners.
4_ No writing section will be involved in this section. Aspirants only required answering and discussing the question orally.
5_ The IELTS speaking test is the shortest one among all the sections. It is conducted within a maximum of 15 minutes.
6_ The speaking section will comprises of 3 parts. Each subsection will be of 4-5 minutes long.
7_ In the first part, the questions will be related to the applicant. There can be questions about his /her interests, likes / dislikes, family, Qualification, hobbies and reasons for choosing a particular subject or course or an educational institution. This segment usually contains predictable questions and is pretty easy to deal with them.
8_ In the second subsection, candidates will given a topic which is known as cue topic and they will need to speak on it for 2 minutes. You will be given 1 minute to prepare the notes for this topic.
9_ The third part is a conceptual one. The grader raises the various issues where you will get an opportunity to answer according to his / her satisfaction.
10_ Even if you are taking a computer delivered test IELTS test, you still need to appear for the face to _face speaking conversation.
11_ The interview is recorded. And, the applicants can take the recordings home too if they are eager to judge themselves on their performance.
12_ The Speaking Examiner is the one who decides the results after the interview ends. Therefore, only experienced, trained, and certified examiners take the test.
13_ Fluency, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary all earn similar marks in the speaking module. To do well, aspirants need to work on all these skills.
