In IELTS Reading module there is variety of question types and for each type one have to follow different strategies to approach them. Make notes
You should make note on question booklets as these are not checked by the examiners so he will not look at these notes. So, don’t hesitate to make notes, underline parts of the text or draw symbols on the question booklet as these things will you to understand the passage better. These notes will probably eliminate the need to read the same portions of the text again and again.
Make intelligent guesses
You should read the titles and subheadings of every text carefully and try to understand about the content what you are going to read. These titles and the subheadings can tell a lot of information about the paragraph. The introduction is also important. If you can guess accurately what you are going to read, you can understand the passage more easily and quickly.
Preparing a mental map is a technique that can help you to understand the passage easily as while reading the passage for the first time, you may find it difficult. Prepare short notes about the topic of each paragraph. In this way if you can predict what the paragraphs are about, you will be able to find answers faster.
Study the keywords in the questions
Keywords play a vital role in the IELTS reading module so scan the text for the keywords or their synonyms. You can easily locate the answer in those parts of the text which contain these keywords.
Skim actively
Skim the text carefully and during the process if you come across any new words, do not worry about these words. There is no need of understanding the meaning of every word in the passage to answer the questions. Just get an overall impression of the passage. Remember to read the first sentence of each paragraph as this can tell you the story of the whole passage.
Anyhow, if any new word seems to be important, try to make guesses about their meaning by looking at the surrounding words and sentences.
Keep track of time
In IELTS Reading 60 minutes is given to solve 40 questions and you have to write the answers in these 60 minutes as no extra time is given for this. It depends upon you as you can write the answers directly on the answer sheet or you can transfer them later but it is recommended to note your answers directly as if you decide to do it latter you will need 10 minutes for it.
In case you don’t get answer of any question don’t stick to it and move to other question. Some questions may be easier than the others, so try to answer the easy questions first.
In the instructions 20 minutes for each passage is recommended and try not to spend more than 20 minutes on single passage. This will help you to complete all the three sections. Candidates who complete all the three sections of the test are more likely to obtain a higher score.
Leave no blanks
In IELTS there is no negative marking so you should not leave any question unanswered. If you don’t get the answer of any question just go with guess work. You might get lucky and you have nothing to lose.
