Common mistakes that can low your score in IELTS Writing Task 1

In IELTS Writing Task 1 there are some common mistakes that students normally do and as a result they lose their scores. So today in this article we will discuss about Common mistakes that can low your score in IELTS Writing Task 1.

1. In the task 1 you often get the line graph and the line will either go up or it will go down or stay same or it will go up and down again and again. So what lots of students focus on is the vocabulary or words which represent the lines going up or down. You have the list of those words such as for increasing: – rise, grow, rocket, soar. You also have one another lists which describe about the line going down. Like as: – decrease, fall, down, drop, plummet. And it’s true that you do need to use enough vocabulary to talk about the things increasing and decreasing. But this is definitely not the thing that is going to give a 7 for vocabulary. So just focusing on this is the wrong thing. Also you should focus on other parameters of task.

2. Some applicant don’t include the overview in the task 1. An overview in task 1 simply show what the common or easy to see trend or pattern in the graph. So overview is important if you don’t have an overview you cannot score more than 5.5. You really do need an overview which is simply one sentence which describes the overall trend of the graph. So, include your overview after the introduction.

3. Most of the time students are not being able to write more than 100 words in 20 minutes and you do get penalized if you don’t write 150 words. So the best way to overcome this is practice. You need to practice at home or in class to complete the 150 word requirement in less than 20 minutes. The more you practice the better you will get the more words and the accurate you will become. So do practice to being perfect.

4. As you all know that in the task 1 you should write at least 150 words. Don’t write more than 170 words because in this way you lose your points. So, don’t try to explain every single dates or information. Along with this, in the introduction you need to write just two sentences. Once you start the third sentence then you are saying more than you need to say. So avoid elaborating the task 1 more and more.

5. Some student writes the information by using I believe, I think, according to me and so on. But these are your own views that what you think about the task. It’s totally wrong..!!  This task is not about you. It’s about the structure or figure that you are going to describe. So, make sure that you don’t write your opinion, conclusions and don’t make any predictions or what’s going to happen.

 6. Remember that task 1 is an objective summary of a graphic piece of information. That means you should just describe the information you see on the diagram and not explain it or comment on it. Giving your opinion would distract you from your writing response as this is not part of the task.

7. Students represent the full tasks with single sentence. They don’t add any variations in sentence formation or use the simple sentence to show the trends but it’s totally wrong. You need to make a complex structure to define the graph. If you do repetition of sentences then examiner think that you don’t have enough knowledge about the sentence structure.
