The IELTS test is conducted to assess your skills involving reading, writing, speaking  and listening. Via IELTS exam, your competence that whether you are able to survive in an English-speaking nation or not is analysed. Therefore, to score desired bands, many times the question arises in the mind of candidate that when is the right time for them to book their exam and how much time would they need to prepare themselves to ace the test.

Average time for preparation

To be honest, its pretty challenging to give a perfect number to you as it completely depends upon the student’s caliber and his/her proficiency in the English-language. Anyway, still if we try to prepare ourselves, we will need nearly 10-15 weeks. But, its absolutely your capability as a student with good command in language can crack this exam even within 4-6 weeks.

Before starting to prepare, the candidate should try to understand the exam pattern. Once the IELTS aspirant gets acquainted with the criteria, planning becomes much easier. Don’t forget to follow and practice only authentic materials as that will keep you updated with the recent patterns. To focus on any specific module, following mentioned guidelines can be considered.

Listening:

Here, a recording is played of nearly 30 minutes and simultaneously student has to solve 40 questions divided in four sections of the test. At last, you are given 10 minutes to transfer your answers on the fair answer sheet in pen-paper based test, though only 2 minutes are given to CD IELTS students.

Part 1: there will be a dialogue on any general topic such as a telephonic conversation to fill a form.

Part 2: single speaker might discuss some facts about a topic such as a speech.

Part 3: conversation between two or more people will be heard and you might be needed to understand opinions of speakers.

Part 4: any academic topic is selected and main ideas for that will be discussed in one go.

Then, how much time is needed for listening preparation? So if we think generally, we find that within two weeks a student starts to score well. More practice will of course boost score additionally. Try to listen more of podcasts, recordings etc. in different accents.

Writing:

This modules is of 60 minutes where student is supposed to write two tasks. For academic students, first task is a visual representation which he needs to observe and write in at least 150words, however for general training students, there is a letter writing task. In task 2, student is required to present ideas with explanation and examples on the given topic in not less than 250 words. To prepare for this module, participant needs short essay practicing and getting them assessed.

How much time is needed to prepare writing section? Again it depends upon your skill of writing and with proper guidance, you can cover this module within 4 weeks as a range of topics are available to have knowledge of.

Reading:

In reading, student is provided with a question booklet containing three long (for academic) or 4short and one long( for GT) passages along with 40 questions. Questions of different types such as matching, fill ups, headings etcetera judge the ability of student to understand the context. But, there is a time limit of 60 minutes to solve these questions and managing time is pretty crucial. In this module, General articles from newspapers, magazines or periodicals etcerera are taken.

Then, how much time do you need to be proficient in this module? Here preparation time depends upon the reading ability. Averagely, four weeks are needed to prepare involving rigorous practice and mock tests.

Speaking:

In this module, a one to one interaction is conducted in the form of interview. Here an IELTS professional, conducts a speaking test for nearly 15 minutes including three rounds.

Round 1: In this introductory section, some questions related to the candidate are asked such as likes, dislikes, hobbies etcetera.

Round 2: A cue topic is given on the spot with one minute preparation time. After this, immediately student gives a talk for two minutes on the same situation continuously.

Round 3: here, questions relevant to cue card are asked demanding exponential explanation

In this test, fillers and pronunciation are really challenging to cover.

How much time you will need for this module preparation? If a student has good exposure and experience along with good communication skills, he might cove4 this within 1 week but for averagely capable student, a 3-4 week practice can be needed.
