Preparation for the IELTS speaking test

In IELTS speaking is the module in which you can score 8. The only thing that you should do to get these scores is to prepare this module very well. If your preparation is sound than you can easily hit your target. So, today in this article we will discuss about preparation for the IELTS speaking test.

What is the IELTS speaking test?

It is the face to face conversation with the examiner. It is same for academic and general training students. This test is conduct to check your speaking ability in English. The examiner gives you scores at the base of your fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. So to get good band score you need to focus on these major parts of speaking.

1. Appropriate signposting

Sign posting are words which help you to organize ideas appropriately. It’s beneficial for listener to understand ideas and it also avoid the confusion. There are some common sign posts:-

Firstly & secondly these two signposting are shows the sequence of ideas

because, which helps to show the reason

For example- in my point of view, there are various difference in……….,

Firstly, if we talk about past……1st idea…….also……..2nd idea…………

On the other hand in these days ………….1st idea………moreover……….2nd idea……….

2. How to prepare the cue card

For preparing cue card you get the 1 minute. To utilize this time you have to prepare content that you can speak for 2 minutes. There are some important points that you should keep in mind.

1. Focus on the tense it is in present or past or future.  If you use wrong tense then it will be count under grammatical errors, which is one of the parameter of speaking.

2. Try to add 2-3 general lines before covering the bullet points.

3. You have no need to think about bullet points.  Just think about the five questions which are why,who,how,what,when.

4. Don’t write the full sentence. Just try to write the main keywords and phrases.

5. Don’t think in regional language.

Moreover, if you have already done the cue card than don’t be overconfident. You must read it again carefully. Sometime they mold the questions. Usually, students do these kinds of mistakes.

How to expand your answer

In IELTS speaking you should not given the answer in single word. Like yes or no. Your answers should be elaborated. You can add valid reason in your question.

• Fillers

Fillers are words or phrases that you can use while speaking to give you time to think or to emphasis a particular point. You should therefore use fillers to fill any potential gaps or hesitations, whether you are taking an exam or just speaking English in everyday life. Fillers are fruitful to fill silence or awkward silent pause before replying. Although these don’t add to a real value to the sentence yet give a good tone & starting.

How to maintain fluency in the cue card

Maintaining fluency in cue card is necessary to get good band scores. Fluency is able to speak a smoothly without noticeable efforts or loss of coherence. Poor fluency contains self- correction, hesitation, pausing or repetition.

For good fluency you should:

• focus on speaking calmly and smoothly

• don’t worry about the quality of ideas, focus on quality of speaking

• don’t waste too much time for choosing appropriate ideas

• Record & listen: – Firstly, record your voice with proper fluency without sticking.  Then record your voice without grammatical errors. It will help to make a balance in these two things.
